18th February 2015 Napier : 'Art Deco Capital' of New Zealand




Quite a long video of the visits in Napier ( 11 minutes )  ... includes lookout views of the docks in use for timber export and very busy with cruse ships .. and lots of sea views, city views and Art Deco tour explanations of the history of the rebuilding ..



The interesting part of Napier is the story of the earthquake... How the people in the town responded to almost total devastation by rebuilding in 2 years by re mortgaging at low interest rates and using highly skilled craftsmen who were pretty desperate for work in the 1930's depression. Apparently the national government wrote off the re mortgages for much of the work ... something which is not happening in Christcurch ...
